Once, “coming out” was something done within gay social worlds. Today, new groups do so to refute stigma, and to reclaim that stigma as pride.

Amin Ghaziani is professor of sociology at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver. His work considers changes in the urban, organizational, and social-movement forms of LGBTQ groups. He is author or editor of five books, including There Goes the Gayborhood? (Princeton University Press, 2014), Sex Cultures (Polity, 2017), and, with Matt Brim, Imagining Queer Methods (NYU Press, 2019). He is currently writing about the transformation of queer nightlife in London.
