Ian Baucom is Professor of English and Director of the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University. He is the author of Out of Place: Englishness, Empire, and the Locations of Identity (1999) and Specters of the Atlantic: Finance Capital, Slavery, and the Philosophy of History. He is currently working on a book provisionally entitled “History 4˚C: Search for a Method.”
