To work as a translator is to encounter a text with an active desire in mind, a desire that both constitutes and modifies the way that text is experienced.

Joshua Sperling teaches film and literature at Oberlin College. His first book, A Writer of Our Time: The Life and Work of John Berger (Verso, 2018), has been translated into Korean, complex and simplified Chinese, and Turkish. He is currently at work on a book of essays on the cinema.
