Ross Posnock teaches American literature from the mid-19th century to now at Columbia University. His books include Color and Culture: Black Writers and the Making of the Modern Intellectual (1998) and Philip Roth’s Rude Truth: The Art of Immaturity (2006); he also edited The Cambridge Companion to Ralph Ellison (2005). Renunciation: Acts of Abandonment by Writers, Artists, and Philosophers will be published by Harvard University Press at the end of 2015.
