Steven Hahn teaches history at NYU. He is the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning A Nation under Our Feet: Black Political Struggles in the Rural South from Slavery to the Great Migration (Harvard University Press, 2003) and, most recently, A Nation without Borders: The United States and Its World in an Age of Civil Wars, 1830–1910 (Penguin, 2016). He is currently writing a book on the illiberal tradition in America.
