Vanessa Smith is a professor of English at the University of Sydney. Her most recent books are Intimate Strangers (2010) and, as coeditor, Mutiny and Aftermath (2013). Her current research uses object relations theory to think about aspects of the Victorian novel such as Realism, minor character, and Bildung.
