Town/Gown — The View from Two Sides of Chicago

Northwestern University and the University of Chicago are private universities in the middle of cities. Each has its own version of what it means to be a university in a community. This event will bring together community leaders, university representatives, and students to generate an up-close look at how ‘town-gown’ relations happen in Evanston and Hyde Park. We’ll talk about our roles in our respective communities to see what we might learn from each other. At a time when so much of our political energy gets sucked up by national partisan divides, this event focuses instead on the specifics of our local contexts. What are the everyday realities, the lived relationships, the policies and spaces that define a university and its city?
